Andrew Garfield Is Playing Sam Altman in a Movie Amazon Dropped - First Look Is Here

The weirdest tech story of 2023 is becoming a movie - and the distribution story might be juicier than the plot.

Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during the five-day period when Altman was fired and rehired in November 2023. First look images dropped September 1. World premiere: New York Film Festival, October 5.

The studio that said no

Amazon MGM originally had the film - then dropped it in June 2026, weeks after Amazon announced a $50 billion partnership with Altman’s OpenAI. Critics called that timing suspicious. Amazon called it business. Neon picked the movie up instead.

So now a film about corporate chaos at the center of the AI boom arrives through an indie distributor after the streaming giant with an OpenAI checkbook walked away. You cannot write that sentence without smiling.

The cast is almost a meme lineup

Garfield plays Altman. Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk. Monica Barbaro is Mira Murati. Yura Borisov is Ilya Sutskever. Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O’Dowd round it out. Written by Simon Rich. It is either brilliant satire or accidental documentary depending on how seriously you take Silicon Valley theater.

Guadagnino directing a tech boardroom fever dream is already funny on paper. Garfield - who can do wounded genius without winking - makes it feel real enough to sting.

Why people will watch

Because everyone has an opinion on AI and almost nobody understands what happened inside OpenAI that week. A movie lets you gossip with production design. NYFF gives it prestige armor. The Amazon drop gives it scandal fuel.

Will it be fair? Probably not. Will it be talked about? Absolutely.

The magazine read

Garfield as Altman. Amazon out, Neon in. $50B partnership in the background. NYFF Oct 5. First look today. The AI era finally got its messy biopic - and the release story is already a subplot.
