Clayface's Friday Was $9.5 Million. The Weekend Is Still a Forecast
Warner and DC's R-rated origin did an estimated $9.5 million on Friday, previews included, from 3,458 theaters. Deadline's weekend range is $23 to $25 million. The Holmes documentary is the other film in the building, tracked near $19 million.
Thursday was a crowd. Friday is a number.
Warner and DC’s Clayface did an estimated $9.5 million in North America on Friday, and that already includes the $3.5 million from Thursday previews, Deadline reported late Friday. The weekend figure parked on top of it is $23 million to $25 million, from 3,458 theaters. Smile opened at $22.6 million. Black Phone 2 opened at $27.2 million. Those are the two neighbors on the sheet. Against a net budget of about $44 million, a mid-20s start is the version of a DC movie that can pay its way without a costume parade and a billion-dollar speech. James Watkins directed. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen. It is rated R, an hour and 48 minutes.
The other film pulling adults is still A24’s You Can See Everything. Deadline has the Holmes documentary near $19 million for this weekend, which would beat the $15.6 million it did on the smaller first run. If both guesses are still standing on Sunday, Paramount-Warner books a second straight No. 1 after Street Fighter’s $31 million, and the documentary sits in the next column over. Studios publish the weekend estimates Sunday morning. Friday is the only day that has actually closed.
The number worth keeping is the $9.5 million. A Friday that swallows a $3.5 million preview and still sits next to Smile is an opening. The $25 million is a forecast with a logo on it.
