Double Fine's First Game After Xbox Costs $5 and Lets You Slap the Bus
Thank You Bus Driver is out today on PC. Tim Schafer's studio left Microsoft in July with its games back, and the comeback is a black-and-white route where thank-yous buy you seconds.
The first game Double Fine has shipped since it got its name back costs $4.99. You drive a town bus. Passengers who break the day’s rules can be slapped. Repeat offenders go out the back door. A thank-you adds seconds to the clock. That is the whole economy.
Thank You Bus Driver landed today on Steam, GOG, itch.io, the Epic Games Store, Humble and Game Jolt. It is PC only for now, and Double Fine already stuck a Steam Deck verified badge on it. The studio’s own line is Crazy Taxi meets Papers, Please. Black and white, shortcuts encouraged, fences optional. Designer Will Koehler came up with it, a small team built it in a matter of weeks, and it ships under Double Fine Action Labs, the new label Tim Schafer uses for what he calls weird little games. He has been plain about the size. This is not Psychonauts 3. It is meant to be cheap and short, and they thought it was fun enough to sell.
The date matters more than the slapstick. On July 6 the studio posted that it was independent again. Seven years inside Xbox, going back to Microsoft’s 2019 acquisition, ended with the games returned to the people who made them. Schafer later described the exit like a watermelon seed: at one point it felt as if they were about to be squashed, and then they shot out. He kept the joke, which is the Double Fine part of the story.
A $5 bus is not a victory lap. It is a sign that the studio can still put something on a store page without asking a platform for permission. The bigger games, if they come, will take longer than a few weeks and more than the price of a round-trip fare. Today the route is short, the rules change every morning, and the only currency that keeps you on schedule is somebody saying thanks.
