GTA 6 Just Played on the Jumbotron at a Dolphins Game
On Oct 11 Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens ran Vice City ads during the home game. It is the first NFL building in the campaign. The real city Rockstar is parodying is now selling the parody back.
Leonida is a joke about Florida. On Sunday the joke bought airtime in the actual stadium.
During the Miami Dolphins’ home game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, the big screens ran Grand Theft Auto VI. Accounts that cover the game, including posts that hit Reddit’s GTA 6 forum, filmed the boards. Rockstar and the Dolphins have not published a price. Earlier Miami placements, the Kaseya Center sign and the street banners, have been talked about locally as something close to a million dollars of county-visible advertising. The stadium number is not in that pile yet. What is in it is the picture: Vice City pink on a screen built for third downs.
This is the first NFL building in the campaign. Hard Rock has done Super Bowls, Copa América, and the kind of concerts where the artist is smaller than the roof. A billboard on a causeway reaches drivers. A Jumbotron reaches forty yards of people who already bought a ticket to be there, plus whoever is watching the broadcast catch the board in the background.
Rockstar has spent the last month letting the game leak into real life on purpose. A magazine got twelve new shots. Creators got unmarked boxes. A Netflix extended look sat on movie charts. Now the map’s inspiration is being asked to clap for the map. November 19 is five weeks out, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, $79.99, a box with a code instead of a disc. The Dolphins did not need to know any of that. They needed a logo that already looks like Miami at night.
If you were in the stands and the board cut to Jason and Lucia between plays, that was not a leak. That was the ad buy working exactly as loud as it was supposed to.
