GTA 6 Just Beat Movies on Netflix - 31 Million Views in Four Days

A video game trailer just body-slammed Hollywood on Netflix.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look - a 27-minute in-game showcase from Rockstar - pulled 31.1 million Netflix views between August 27 and August 30. Netflix only had it exclusively for six hours. Then it went to YouTube. And it still topped the English-language movies chart in 87 of 93 countries Netflix tracks.

Yes. A game promo beat Robert De Niro’s new film The Whisper Man (23.2M). Beat Outer Banks season five. Became No. 1 on a movies list. Because 2026 stopped making sense months ago.

Why this number is stupid

Netflix counts a “view” differently than YouTube. One household finishing the special = one view, even if they replay it. So 31.1 million means a ridiculous number of people sat through nearly half an hour of Vice City footage like it was a movie night.

On YouTube, Rockstar’s upload already cleared 17+ million views after the exclusivity window ended. Two platforms. Same hunger. Release date still locked for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What you actually see

Jason and Lucia. Combat changes. Character swapping. Side activities. Story teases. All captured from the PlayStation 5 build. Not a cinematic reel with fake lighting. Actual gameplay length that feels closer to a documentary than a trailer.

Before the premiere, more than a dozen clips leaked online. Take-Two already subpoenaed Discord hunting the leaker. Classic Rockstar week: chaos, then a record, then silence until launch.

Why people will search this for weeks

Because GTA VI is the most anticipated entertainment product on Earth, and Netflix just proved you can turn a game look into chart-topping “movie” inventory. First time Netflix did this for a video game. Probably not the last.

The magazine read

Six hours exclusivity. 31.1M Netflix views. 17M+ on YouTube. Beat De Niro. Nov 19. The game is not even out and it is already winning streaming weeks.
