Nolan Opens The Odyssey in Mumbai - First Real Audience Sees the IMAX Epic

Hollywood usually launches its biggest films in London, New York or Los Angeles. Christopher Nolan chose Mumbai.

On July 10 and 11, 2026, before anyone else on Earth could buy a ticket, an IMAX theatre in Lower Parel screened The Odyssey - Nolan’s take on Homer, shot entirely for IMAX, with Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as Telemachus. The director stood up afterwards and said the quiet part out loud: this was the first real audience to see the finished film.

Not a friends-and-family pass. Not a studio screening. A room full of people who showed up because they care about movies.

What happened in Mumbai

Nolan arrived with producer Emma Thomas, Damon and Holland. Standing ovation on the way in. Cheers on the way out. Damon called it the first time the film had sat in front of strangers rather than family. Holland thanked Indian crowds for an energy he said no other cinema culture quite matches.

Nolan has shot in India before. He has never opened a film there. That detail matters more than the carpet photos. For a director obsessed with how images feel on a giant screen, starting in one of the world’s most hungry IMAX markets is not a PR stunt - it is a bet on where the loudest reaction will come from.

Tickets for the July 17 global release are already absurd in places. Mumbai IMAX seats have been listed around Rs 3,100. Delhi not far behind. Chennai, somehow, still finds IMAX under Rs 600. The map of who wants this film is written in those prices.

Ten years home from Troy. Monsters, gods, a wife waiting, a son growing up without his father. Nolan has always liked stories about time, duty and people who cannot put the journey down. Homer gave him the oldest version of that problem.

Why this feels different

Most blockbuster premieres are logistics dressed as celebration. This one has a cleaner idea: show the film first to the audience that will fight hardest for the big screen.

Early reactions out of Mumbai have been warm - scale, emotion, the IMAX craft. A few voices already call it slow. That split is familiar Nolan weather. The interesting part is not the scoreboard of quotes. It is that India got the first look, and the cast treated that as the real premiere rather than a side trip.

July 17 is when the rest of the world catches up. Until then, Mumbai has bragging rights Homer never saw coming.
