The Odyssey Is Nolan's Biggest Film Ever - and IMAX's Too

Christopher Nolan just put a Greek epic on top of his own filmography - and on top of IMAX’s.

The Odyssey has reached about $1.1 billion worldwide. That makes it Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, sliding past The Dark Knight Rises (about $1.08 billion) and the original Dark Knight. The man who taught a generation to sit still for dream heists and Bat-operas just did it with mythology, cameras the size of small cars, and a summer that refused to let go.

Domestic legs are doing the quiet flex. In its fourth weekend, The Odyssey pulled about $31.5 million in North America - a drop of only about 38%. For a movie of this scale in August heat, that is not a soft landing. IMAX’s new mountain: $289 million

Here is the number that will live in trade-press headlines for years: IMAX has taken about $289 million on The Odyssey - the highest IMAX gross for any film ever, beating Avatar’s roughly $271 million.

China on deck - and Korea already flexed

China opens August 14 with a footprint that sounds like a logistics whiteboard: roughly 9,000 theaters, potentially 25,000 to 35,000 screens depending how you count, and about 800 IMAX auditoriums in the mix. If even a portion of that appetite shows up, the $1.1B total gets another chapter.

South Korea already delivered a statement: about $14.5 million opening weekend - Nolan’s highest opening there. Premium formats are not a Western quirk on this run. They are the global language of the movie.

Why this feels different from a regular Nolan hit

Dark Knight movies were cultural weather systems with Batman IP armor. Inception and Interstellar were puzzles people wanted to argue about. Dunkirk was a clock. Oppenheimer was a three-hour conversation starter that somehow became a date-night phenomenon.

The Odyssey is scarcity plus spectacle. Limited true 70mm footprints earlier in the run trained fans to treat tickets like pilgrimage. The IMAX record says the pilgrimage scaled. The worldwide number says the pilgrimage paid.
