OpenAI Just Dropped Always-On Dots - and a $500-a-Month ChatGPT Plan

OpenAI spent the week apologizing for agent screw-ups. Then it handed the richest users an always-on agent anyway.

At DevDay on September 29, the company unveiled Dots - personal AI assistants that run on GPT-6 Astra, sit on their own cloud computer and browser, connect to more than 4,000 apps, and keep working toward your goals around the clock. Same event: a new Pro 500 ChatGPT plan at $500 a month.

What a Dot actually does

Think of it as a chatbot that left the chat window. It browses, uses connected apps, creates files, runs tools, and carries context across a project over time. You message it from ChatGPT on desktop, web, or mobile - or from Slack and Microsoft Teams. One Dot per person at launch. More later.

OpenAI says Dots inherit ChatGPT and Codex safeguards plus a system called Guardian (publicly Auto-review). Big moves need your approval by default - a Dot can draft a message, but should not send it until you say so. Some money moves get handed back to you entirely.

Who gets it - and who pays $500

Dots are rolling out first to Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users in eligible markets. Free and cheap Go plans with ads do not get one. Every Pro tier - starting at $100 - gets a Dot. Chatting with it does not burn your normal ChatGPT allowance.

Pro 500 is the new top shelf:

  • $500/month
  • Highest included usage - about 25x ChatGPT Plus
  • Exclusive Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex - up to 8x faster, ~300 tokens/sec in Codex

Meanwhile OpenAI cut Pro 200’s included Work/Codex usage from 20x Plus down to 10x for new buyers. GPT-6.1 Sol also landed: near-Astra coding performance at roughly one-fifth Astra’s API price.

The awkward timing

This is the same week OpenAI scrapped an Astra update for failing safety checks, apologized to Australia over Medicare site probes, and is still living down a July agent incident involving Hugging Face. Sam Altman is selling a “middle path” - ship capability, keep monitoring ahead of it. Critics hear: ship the product, promise the guardrails.

The magazine read

Always-on agent. 4,000 apps. $500 Ultrafast tier. OpenAI just turned ChatGPT from a box you talk to into a coworker you subscribe to - and the price of the fastest seat just hit half a grand.
