Resident Evil Just Posted a $60M Opening - Biggest in Franchise History
Cregger's reboot: $60M domestic, $108.3M worldwide. Crushed the old $26M Afterlife record. Beat Weapons' global open. Spidey third with $6.5M, now ~$944M domestic.
Raccoon City printed money.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil opened to $60 million domestically and $108.3 million worldwide - the biggest debut in the 24-year film franchise, more than double the old champ (Afterlife, $26M). It also beat Cregger’s own Weapons global open and, in one weekend, outgrossed the entire worldwide run of the original 2002 movie.
Why the number matters
Tracking said $40-50M. Reviews and word-of-mouth shoved it higher. Sony suddenly has a horror tentpole that looks alive instead of nostalgic cosplay. Japan, China, and more markets still loading - this is not even the full map yet.
Weekend board: RE No. 1, Practical Magic 2 hanging on, Spider-Man third with $6.5M and a domestic total near $944M after stealing the all-time crown earlier in the week.
The magazine read
Franchise record. Director record. Zombies win September. Cregger is not a fluke - he is a machine.
