The wait is basically over. Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing, the first since the world forgot Peter Parker - is already swinging through early markets and opens wide in the United States on Friday, July 31.

Critics are in. Tickets are moving. And the box office conversation has gone from “big” to “maybe historic.”

The numbers before the weekend

MetricFigure
US releaseJuly 31, 2026
Hollywood premiereJuly 27, Dolby Theatre
Rotten Tomatoes~91% Fresh (~200+ reviews)
Metacritic69 / generally favorable
Budget (est.)~$225M
US theaters~4,300
US presales~$80M (near No Way Home’s ~$78M)
Global open (tracking)~$465M ($195M domestic + $270M intl in one model)

Sony’s own language has been more conservative domestically ($190-195M). Rivals and trackers keep floating $250M+, with some wilder chatter north of $300M. Either way, Brand New Day is lined up to be the biggest opening of 2026 so far - ahead of Toy Story 5’s $159.6M - and Sony’s second-biggest worldwide launch behind only No Way Home ($600.5M).

China alone is eyed for roughly $45M in the opening frame. Early countries (Germany, France and others) already got a head start. Amazon Prime members in the US got a Wednesday one-showtime peek before Thursday noon previews.

One catch: true IMAX screens are still tied up by Nolan’s The Odyssey into early August. Spidey opens without that format - and the industry still expects a stampede. Premium large formats are covering what IMAX cannot this weekend.

What the movie is

Official pitch, cut clean: Peter fights crime full-time in a world that does not remember him. Watching old friends move on sparks a change he may not control - and that change might be the only thing that can stop a villain no one can even see.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi), written again by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Cast: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal (Punisher), Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, Mark Ruffalo. Music by Michael Giacchino. Phase Six of the MCU. Runtime about 2 hours 25 minutes.

After three Jon Watts films and a multiverse blowout, this is the reset chapter: street-level loneliness, new threat, no guest-star circus required.

What critics are saying

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus calls it a web of spectacular set pieces with mature emotional stakes and Holland’s “soulful” performance - a promising reset that keeps Spidey sticky. Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney says it “foregrounds the humanity that has always been Spidey’s greatest strength,” with a “never-better” Holland. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman likes the action and villain but finds it “arduous,” “clunkily episodic,” and half an hour too long. The Guardian praises ambition and Holland-Zendaya chemistry while calling the ride uneven.

Net read: audiences are getting the emotional Spidey movie they asked for, with the usual Marvel runtime arguments attached.

Why this weekend matters

Comic-book fatigue was real. Brand New Day is the counter-argument: a character people still show up for, a clean hook after No Way Home, strong early reviews, and pre-sales that look like 2021 again. Exhibitors already have it claiming about half of this weekend’s showtimes in some counts - more aggressive share than Odyssey held on its open.

Women under 25 - often late to Marvel - are being watched closely because of Zendaya and Sink. If casuals join the fans who already bought tickets, the high end of tracking stops looking crazy.

Avengers: Doomsday still looms in December. Brand New Day is the summer proof that Spidey can carry a year without the whole Avengers kitchen sink.

In short

  • Opens US July 31 - early markets already live; premiere was July 27
  • ~91% RT, Metacritic 69, Holland praised as never better
  • Tracking ~$465M global / biggest 2026 open so far; ~$80M US presales
  • Cretton reset: forgotten Peter, invisible threat, street-level stakes
  • No IMAX this opening weekend - Odyssey still has those screens

The world forgot Peter Parker. Theaters did not forget Spider-Man. Friday is when that gap gets tested for real.
