Spider-Man Just Broke the Box Office Before Friday Even Started
Brand New Day clears $50M+ US Thursday previews - beating No Way Home - while India posts a Rs 72 crore Day-1 Hollywood record over Endgame. No IMAX. 98% audience score. Opening day chaos.
Friday has not even finished yet. The record book is already on fire.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Tom Holland’s reset after the world forgot Peter Parker - opened wide in the US on July 31. By Thursday night it had already done something ridiculous: more than $50 million in North American previews, beating the Thursday haul of No Way Home, and staking a claim as the best Sony preview ever, the best post-COVID preview, and one of the three biggest preview nights in Hollywood history.
Some industry whispers were already asking whether the final preview tally might even flirt with Avengers: Endgame’s legendary $60M Thursday. Deadline’s overnight read locked in the safer, still insane floor: $50M+, ahead of No Way Home, with the Endgame chase to be settled by morning math.
And that is before you look at India.
The night the spiders ate the calendar
Showtimes started at noon Thursday. Cash also includes Wednesday’s Amazon Prime member screening. No Way Home’s famous $50M preview night began later in the afternoon and still became the third-best preview ever - behind only Endgame ($60M) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($57M).
Brand New Day just stepped over that No Way Home line while the weekend was still waking up.
| Record chase | Number |
|---|---|
| US/Canada Thursday previews | $50M+ (ahead of No Way Home) |
| Advance ticket sales (reported) | ~$80M |
| India Day 1 gross | ~Rs 72.44 crore - biggest Hollywood opener ever there |
| India Day 1 net (est.) | ~Rs 60.60 crore - past Endgame’s ~Rs 54 cr net |
| India occupancy | ~72% overall; Hindi dub reportedly near 95% |
| Audience score (RT) | 98% - best of nine live-action Spider-Man films |
| Critics (RT) | ~90% Fresh |
| Promo partners | $309M campaign - Hollywood record |
| Weekend tracking | $260M-$300M domestic in bullish models (Sony more conservative earlier) |
Read that table twice. The movie is opening without true IMAX screens - still locked by Nolan’s The Odyssey - and it is still printing money like the format never mattered.
Barbie did something similar against Oppenheimer three summers ago. Spidey just did it with web-shooters and a forgotten secret identity.
India decided to make history first
While America was still counting Thursday previews, India already crowned a new king of Hollywood openers.
Trackers put Brand New Day at roughly Rs 72.44 crore gross on Day 1 - clearing Avengers: Endgame, Pathaan, and other local benchmarks for a non-Indian film’s debut. Net estimates around Rs 60.60 crore also sit above Endgame’s old first-day net mark.
The mix is wild: English took a huge cash share, but the Hindi dub reportedly packed houses hardest. About 17,250 shows. Near three-quarters occupancy overall. That is not “import curiosity.” That is a national event with a spider logo.
If the weekend holds, Endgame’s India opening-weekend crown is in genuine danger. For a Hollywood title, that sentence used to sound like fan fiction. Today it sounds like a spreadsheet.
Why this feels different from “another Marvel Friday”
Comic-book fatigue was supposed to be the plot of 2025-26. Brand New Day walked into that story with:
- a clean hook (the world forgot Peter)
- strong reviews and a near-perfect audience score
- Destin Daniel Cretton’s street-level reset after the Watts trilogy
- Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk energy in the trailers
- and a marketing machine so loud the partner spend alone ($309M) set a Hollywood record
No Way Home had multiverse nostalgia as a cheat code. Brand New Day is trying to win on character, timing, and pure want-to-see. The preview money says the want-to-see is real.
Exhibitors had already given it roughly half of weekend showtimes before doors opened. Odyssey, for comparison, held about 22% on its own giant launch. The industry smelled this one early.
The math nerds are losing their minds (in a good way)
No Way Home’s $50M previews were only about 41% of its first Friday ($122M), on the way to a $260.1M domestic opening - second all-time behind Endgame’s $357.1M.
If Brand New Day’s preview-to-Friday ratio even vaguely rhymes with that, you are staring at a historic weekend. Bullish trackers were already floating $260M-$300M domestically before Thursday’s cash landed. Some louder voices - after early preview chatter - started mumbling about Endgame’s all-time opening record like it was no longer science fiction.
Calm down, Hollywood. Count Friday first. But do not pretend the room is not vibrating.
Global models that once talked $465M worldwide opening suddenly look polite. International is already sprinting. America just proved the domestic engine is not tired.
What you are actually walking into
A ~2 hour 25 minute Spidey movie about a hero the city does not remember, a change he may not control, and a threat nobody can see. Cretton directing. Holland, per many critics, never better. Runtime arguments included - this is still Marvel - but the audience score suggests people are leaving happy.
The paradox of the weekend: the most in-demand blockbuster in America cannot use the most in-demand IMAX glass. Odyssey still owns those projectors. Spidey is answering with volume, PLFs, and lines around the block anyway.
In short
- $50M+ US Thursday previews - ahead of No Way Home, best Sony / best post-COVID preview night
- India Day 1 ~Rs 72 crore - biggest Hollywood opening day in the country, past Endgame
- 98% audience score; ~90% critics; $309M promo-partner record
- No IMAX, still a stampede; weekend chase points at $260M+ domestic in bullish reads
Friday is supposed to be the beginning. Brand New Day treated Thursday like the main event - and somehow made the main event feel bigger.
