Squadron 42 Finally Has a Steam Page, and the Cast Is Ridiculous
Cloud Imperium opened wishlists on Oct 10 for the Star Citizen spinoff, aimed at Q2 2027. Hamill, Oldman, Cavill, Gillian Anderson. The MMO that paid for it still is not finished.
People have been hearing Gary Oldman’s name next to Squadron 42 for more than ten years. On October 10, Cloud Imperium finally put a Steam wishlist under it.
The single-player spinoff of Star Citizen is aimed at the second quarter of 2027. The new trailer is cutscenes, a little shooting on the ground, a little fighting in space. You are a rookie in the United Empire of Earth navy in 2945, bunked on a capital ship while the empire frays. Stealth, fleet battles, choices you make with the crew. It looks, on purpose, a bit like Starship Troopers after someone removed the joke.
The cast is what makes the page feel like a payroll instead of a promise. Mark Hamill. Gary Oldman. Gillian Anderson. Henry Cavill. Andy Serkis. Ben Mendelsohn. Liam Cunningham. John Rhys-Davies. Mark Strong. Performance capture, faces included. Chris Roberts, who made Wing Commander before he made the most expensive unfinished crowdsourced game on earth, did not do an interview the day the trailer landed.
Star Citizen was announced in 2012. Backers have put more than a billion dollars into it. Early access has been up since 2017, and the complaints in 2026 are the same ones: empty missions, bugs that end a session, ships that cost hundreds or thousands of real dollars. Squadron 42 was supposed to be the one you can finish. A comment under the news said the quiet part out loud. They were excited in 2014. They will believe the date when the game is in the store, not when the cast list is.
A wishlist costs nothing. A 2027 window from this studio is a rumor with better lighting. It is still the first time in a long while that Squadron 42 has looked like something a person might actually download.
