August 6 was about distance - and about money.
Ukrainian drones reached Bashneft-Novoil in Bashkortostan, roughly 1,300 kilometers from the front, and Slavneft-Yanos about 700 kilometers in. Those are not symbolic warehouses. They are pieces of Russia’s refining machine - the machinery that turns crude into fuel, export revenue, and the budget line that pays for the war.
In the Black Sea, Ukrainian forces also hit vessels linked to the shadow fleet - the aging tankers and obscure ownership webs that move sanctioned oil. Moscow answered the usual way: mass drone and missile pressure on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Early Ukrainian tallies put the civilian toll above 11 dead. Kherson reported a blackout. Russia claimed it downed 605 Ukrainian drones in the wider defensive story of the day - a number large enough to advertise panic and competence at the same time.
Why refineries
Oil is Russia’s most reliable cash tap. Hit production fields and you argue with geology. Hit refining and export logistics and you argue with next month’s budget. Fires at Novoil and Yanos do not end the war. They raise the price of keeping the war financed.
Kyiv has been running this campaign for months: deep drones, soft targets with hard economic meaning, nights when Russian air defense has to choose what to save.
Shadow fleet, bright explosions
The Black Sea strikes matter because sanctions without enforcement are PowerPoint. Old tankers with murky flags keep Russian barrels moving. Damaging those boats is a way to make insurance, crews, and ports think twice - slower than a UN resolution, louder than a statement.
The return fire
Russia’s response is the other half of the ledger. Ukrainian families do not experience “strategic depth” as a briefing slide. They experience sirens, outages in Kherson, and death counts that climb while analysts talk about refining capacity. Eleven-plus killed is not a footnote to a successful deep strike. Moscow’s 605 drones downed figure will be debated by open-source accounts for days. Even if inflated, it admits the volume Ukraine is throwing. Even if accurate, it admits how much still gets through to places 1,300 kilometers inside Russia.
