Verity Took the Weekend - and Tom Cruise's Digger Just Bombed Hard
Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity opened ~$62.6M worldwide / $32.6M NA. Cruise's Iñárritu satire Digger managed ~$8M domestic and $20M world - one of his worst debuts. Resident Evil still holding.
Colleen Hoover won the weekend. Tom Cruise did not.
Amazon MGM’s Verity - Dakota Johnson ghostwriting for an incapacitated Anne Hathaway, directed by Michael Showalter - opened at roughly $32.6 million in North America and about $62.6 million worldwide across 71 territories. That was enough for domestic and global No. 1 over the October 2–4 frame.
The Digger crater
Warner Bros.’ Digger, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s critically battered satire with Cruise, opened to about $8 million domestic and $20 million worldwide - sixth globally, tied for a grim domestic fifth with A24’s Primetime. International ($12M from 74 markets) beat North America, which is not the Cruise overseas flex anyone expected. On the cusp of Warner’s Paramount merger, it is a brutal final note for the studio as a standalone.
What else held
- Resident Evil (Sony) - still punching, ~$12.5M domestic weekend, ~$235M worldwide cume
- Heart of the Beast (Brad Pitt) - ~$11M domestic, nearing $99M world
- Avengers Endgame: Encore - quieter second weekend domestically, still adding overseas fuel to the all-time race
- India’s Drishyam: The Conclusion - monster home weekend (~₹176.5 Cr) while also cracking the global top ten
The magazine read
Hoover IP at No. 1. Cruise satire at $8M. The weekend just reminded Hollywood that star power without the right movie is still just a name on a poster.
