The Witcher 3 Remaster Just Broke Steam - 120K Players, 94 on Metacritic
CDPR's free remaster for owners hits 120,000+ concurrent on Steam, beating the 2015 launch and Netflix surge. Metacritic 94. Ciri's Witcher IV still 2028.
Eleven years later, Geralt is busier than on launch day.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is out - and Steam is melting. Concurrent players shot past 120,000, beating the original 2015 launch by more than 27,000 and crushing the 2020 Netflix-series spike that peaked around 103,000. Critics put the remaster at 94 on Metacritic, above the original’s 92. Existing owners get the upgrade for free.
Not just prettier polygons
CD Projekt Red did not ship a coat of paint. The remaster packs advanced visual updates, performance upgrades, overhauled systems and mechanics, and a pile of quality-of-life fixes. It is the definitive Continent - available on Steam, Epic, GOG, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and even Switch 2. Those Steam numbers are PC only. Consoles and other storefronts are on top.
User reviews on Steam are sitting near a quarter-million and still reading Overwhelmingly Positive. Newcomers are dropping in because the franchise is loud again. Veterans are dropping in because the remaster is free and they never finished Blood and Wine.
Why the timing hits
The Witcher is not a single game anymore. It is a content pipeline:
- Songs of the Past - story expansion due next year
- The Witcher IV - Ciri as lead, new trilogy, targeting 2028
- A ground-up remake of the 2007 Witcher from Fool’s Theory
- Netflix Season 5 (final) due 2027
A free remaster that reviews better than the original is the cheapest marketing money can buy for all of that. CDPR gets a Steam chart screenshot. New players get Geralt before Ciri takes the sword. Old players get an excuse to reinstall.
The magazine read
120K concurrent. 94 Metacritic. Free for owners. The White Wolf just stole September’s Steam crown - and the remaster weekend has barely started.
