A monster wildfire west of Bordeaux has forced about 220,000 people from their homes in Gironde - what Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez called very likely France’s largest peacetime civilian evacuation. The burn scar sits around 420 square kilometers, roughly four times the size of Paris. Authorities keep saying the fire is “fixed” but not contained. In firefighter language that means: we are holding it, the weather can still break us.
Heat keeps rewriting the plan
Gusting winds and bone-dry air pushed overnight evacuation orders into more towns southwest of the city. Bordeaux itself has not emptied - Mayor Thomas Cazenave has been walking a careful line between calm and honesty - but suburbs and Atlantic tourist strips have.
Across France and Spain the displacement tally sits near 330,000. Spain is staring down its fourth heat wave of the summer, with at least one blaze already called the largest in its recorded history. Some Spanish towns started lifting orders after overnight progress. France is still adding names to the leave list when the mercury climbs.
Macron called the situation France’s hardest since World War II. That is not press-release poetry. That is a president looking at camps, closed beaches, and wine villages under ash.
What “go home” really means
In places near Bordeaux where flames never arrived - Le Haillan, parts of Mérignac and Eysines - some residents got the green light to return with phones on and emergency bags packed. Conditional normal. The kind of normal that lasts until the next wind shift.
Tourists on Cap-Ferret and the dune beaches keep getting shuffled. Planes and helicopters work the coastline. Hotels fill with people who packed for holidays and ended up with smoke in their lungs.
Europe’s summer used to be traffic jams and overpriced Aperol. This version is evacuation apps and yellow heat warnings that refuse to expire. Bordeaux is the postcard. The fire is the caption nobody wanted.
