JD Vance Calls Diddy a 'Great Christian Theologian' - Then Walks It Back

JD Vance was at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library on June 25 to talk about faith. He ended up talking about P Diddy instead.

Promoting his memoir Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, the vice president riffed on a chapter called More Money, More Problems - and name-dropped Sean Combs.

”A great Christian theologian”

Vance joked that Diddy is “a great Christian theologian - P Diddy”.

“I’m a millennial,” he said - hence the reference to More Money, More Problems.

The room laughed. Then he caught himself:

He is very much not a Christian or a theologian.

He added:

I’m gonna get in trouble for that. That’ll be in an attack ad.

It was classic Vance: a wink, a pivot, and an admission that the clip will live forever.

Why the joke lands awkwardly

Sean “Diddy” Combs was sentenced in 2025 to roughly 50 months in prison on prostitution-related charges after a high-profile trial. The hip-hop mogul is not exactly a go-to name for a vice president pitching redemption and scripture.

Vance’s book charts his return to Catholicism after years away from the church. The Diddy line was meant as self-deprecating humour about wealth and temptation - not a theological endorsement.

But in 2026 politics, context rarely survives a 15-second cut.

Watergate would last 12 hours

Vance also mused that Watergate - the scandal that brought down Nixon - would be “a 12-hour headline” in today’s media cycle.

He spoke at the library of the president who resigned in 1974. The irony was not lost on anyone in the room.

Bottom line

Faith memoir tour. One joke about Diddy. One walk-back. One prediction about attack ads.

He was probably right about the last part.
