Kyiv Under Attack: Fire at Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, 140,000 Without Power
Klitschko reported 10 injured, three in critical condition. Assumption Cathedral - UNESCO site - caught fire. Obolon: building destroyed between 3rd and 4th floors.
On the night of June 15, Kyiv woke up to explosions again. The most painful hit did not land on another random building - it struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s main spiritual and cultural symbols and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a fire on the lavra grounds around 01:48. Flames engulfed the roof of the Assumption Cathedral. According to preliminary data, this was a direct strike. On the monastery grounds, icons, antimins, and other sacred items were urgently evacuated - before the fire reached the main treasures.
Klitschko said 10 people were injured, three in critical condition. Later the numbers grew as rubble was cleared - but by morning the picture was clear: the city was hit massively, with dozens of drones and ballistic weapons.
Damage by district:
- Pechersk - hit on a five-story residential building
- Obolonskyi - strike on a building between the third and fourth floors, structure partially destroyed
- Solomianskyi - nine-story building damaged
- Podilskyi - hits also recorded
140,000 residents in the northern part of the city were left without electricity - power lines were damaged.
Head of the Kyiv Military Administration Timur Tkachenko called the strike on the lavra an attack «on the heart of one of the greatest Christian shrines». In Europe, comparisons are already being made to the destruction of Notre-Dame - as a cultural tragedy, not just a military one.
The lavra was founded in 1051. It has been hit before - but every new fire on this ground hurts more than just Kyiv. Ukraine is calling on UNESCO and international bodies to respond.
While rescuers fight the cathedral roof, residents sit in shelters, and the north of the city lives without power. And this is «peace talks» in the background of a war that other capitals keep talking about.
