Nvidia's DLSS 5 Leaked Early - Modders Already Dropped It Into Skyrim and GTA V

Nvidia wanted a clean September launch. The internet said no.

DLSS 5 - Nvidia’s new 3D-Guided Neural Rendering tech - was supposed to debut properly on September 3 inside NBA 2K27 for GeForce RTX 50 cards. Instead, a 158MB file named nvngx_dlssnr.dll showed up in an early-access build. Modders yanked it. Within hours it was running in Control, GTA V, Skyrim, and Cyberpunk 2077.

This is not your dad’s upscaler.

What it actually does

Older DLSS mostly boosted frames and sharpened edges. DLSS 5 uses generative AI to rebuild lighting, skin, hair glow, and materials in real time - using the game’s own frame as a base so artists stay in control. Think: the game still decides what is on screen, the AI decides how light behaves like a spoiled cinematographer.

Early tests look either magical or cursed depending on who you ask. Frame rates can get cut in half. Control on an RTX 5070 Ti: roughly 71 FPS to 35. GTA V: 90 to 29. Cyberpunk on a 5090 still holds better, but nothing is free.

Official day is tomorrow

Nvidia’s real launch window: September 3, 9pm Pacific, starting with NBA 2K27 and GeForce NOW. Players can toggle neural rendering off and keep the performance side. More games will follow. RTX 50 series is the main target, though some users already claim older 40-series cards half-work.
