The Odyssey IMAX 70mm - Only 41 Cinemas on Earth, Sold Out Into September
Nolan's The Odyssey can play true IMAX 70mm in just 41 theaters worldwide. BFI London sold out through September 10. Fans fly in. Projectors haven't been built in 50 years.
There are roughly 41 movie theaters on the entire planet that can show Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey the way it was shot - real IMAX 70mm film.
And at a lot of them, you are already too late. London’s BFI IMAX has sold out every scheduled 70mm screening through September 10. All 173 shows across August and early September - gone. Fans are flying in from Singapore, Canada, the US just to sit in one of those seats.
This is not a marketing line. It is a scarcity problem with a $264 million opening weekend attached.
Why only 41
The Odyssey is billed as the first feature shot entirely on IMAX 15/70 cameras. To see the full frame - the format Nolan keeps telling people to hunt for - you need a theater that can still project IMAX film.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond put it bluntly: they have not made new IMAX film projectors in about 50 years. The company rebuilds and retrofits what it can find. Building fresh ones for this stock is “not practical.” Of about 2,000 IMAX screens worldwide, only a tiny club can run true 70mm.

Sold out into September
BFI IMAX is the loudest example - sold out into early September, with more dates expected. Elsewhere Gelfond said some theaters were sold out into week five, including 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. shows. IMAX 70mm runs for the next month are largely gone except scattered front-row leftovers.
Tickets for some 70mm showtimes went on sale a year in advance. Opening weekend: $264.1M global, $124.5M domestic. IMAX alone did a company-best weekend. The 41 film screens still pulled $6.3M - status-symbol cinema with a queue around the block.
The flex and the frustration
Nolan turned a dead projector technology into the hottest ticket of the summer. Fans treat 70mm like a pilgrimage. Theaters add midnight and 3 a.m. shows and still sell them. IMAX dedicates screens to The Odyssey for three weeks.
The frustration is the ceiling. Demand is there. New film projectors are not. Gelfond wants growth - “I’d like to see more” - but the hardware pool is finite. Until someone builds more 15/70 beasts, The Odyssey in its purest form stays locked behind 41 doors.
