Iran Says It Stopped Tankers in Hormuz - Oil Climbs Again on Friday

Friday’s oil tape did not need a confirmed explosion. It needed a credible story about the choke point. Iran delivered one.

The IRGC said it struck and halted two oil tankers trying to leave the Strait of Hormuz on an “unauthorized route” under US military air escort. Four other tankers turned back after warnings, the statement claimed. Independent confirmation stayed thin. Traders did not wait for satellite receipts. Prices rose more than 1%.

July already looked ugly

Brent was on track for roughly a 23% monthly climb before Friday’s bump - war risk, tanker scares near Oman, Houthi pressure in the Red Sea, US blockade talk on Iranian exports. Economists polled by Reuters were already betting on more heat into the year. Another Hormuz headline just poured fuel on a fire that was lit weeks ago.

Shipping data from firms like Kpler still showed some large tankers and commodity vessels passing. Transponders off do not show up in those charts. That gap is where rumor lives.

Washington and Tehran talking past each other

CENTCOM keeps saying the blockade of Iranian Gulf exports holds and strike waves continue. Treasury has been stacking sanctions on networks tied to IRGC-linked insurance and Mahan Air logistics. Oman has floated a Gulf-backed plan to manage the strait - voluntary fees, managed lanes. Iran has publicly frowned at it while foreign ministry voices say talks with Oman continue.

So: ships sometimes move, sometimes get warned, sometimes get claimed as “stopped.” Markets price the worst version of each rumor because insurance desks do.
