Rockstar Finally Explained How Cops Work in GTA 6

For years the GTA fantasy was simple. Do something stupid, watch the stars fill in, outrun a helicopter. Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, sat in an Edinburgh office and told IGN the new version is pickier than that.

IGN put the full interview out on October 7, from a 30-minute playthrough Nelson did back in the summer. The line that stuck: a crime has to be seen, or an alarm has to go off, before the law even hears about it. Hollow stars on the HUD mean the cops know something happened. They do not know it was you yet.

A single solid star is meant to be easy to shake. Nelson kept coming back to a hit-and-run rhythm. Commit the crime, leave before the cars arrive, do not start shooting unless you want the night to get worse. Jason and Lucia are a couple on the run. The systems are built to agree with that story. If you would rather turn a parking lot into a war, the game will let you. It just will not pretend that was the smart play.

Clothes matter more than a pair of sunglasses. Police get a description. A hat on top of the same outfit does not wipe it. A full change of clothes can. So can pulling a mask off once you are out of sight, or swapping cars and driving like a person who has somewhere normal to be. Your own vehicle can carry spare outfits. Split the pair up and the heat has two problems instead of one. When it is quiet, you can text the other one and ask if they made it.

Money is no longer pocket lint between missions. Nelson said you can rob pretty much anything that counts as a business, and he used a headphone shop as the example, with a bank and a payday lender on the list he had been meaning to hit. Park the getaway first. Kill the cameras. Look for a safe combo or bring something that opens metal. Story progress waits on cash, and early on some parked cars simply will not let you in. You can still take one from a driver.

The weird Florida details are still in there. IGN found a man in a dumpster who asked for pills and later offered legal advice. Shops stock haircuts you cannot get on the other side of town. Stand near an NPC long enough and they stop reciting ambient chatter and start wondering why you are in their space.

November 19. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The stars are no longer just a score. They are a description of what you were wearing when you messed up.
