Gears of War: E-Day Spent the Night Kicking Players Off

Gears of War: E-Day is an Xbox exclusive, and for a stretch overnight it was an Xbox exclusive you could not play.

The Coalition confirmed the game was hit by a denial-of-service attack. Players got kicked, logins failed, and the services behind the game stopped answering. Xbox Support said the trouble was cleared, roughly twenty minutes before TheGamer’s write-up went up early Monday. Official channels have been specific about the target. They say E-Day, not the whole Xbox network. Plenty of people online claimed their entire console side was wobbling. That part is not confirmed.

The annoying detail is the campaign. E-Day wants you online even when you are not in a match. When the services went down, single-player went with them. A campaign that cannot start because a server is busy is a design choice players have been complaining about since always-online became a default. Tonight it stopped being a forum argument and became the loading screen.

Denial-of-service attacks are blunt. They flood a service until it cannot answer real players. They do not need a clever exploit, and they do not hand anyone the keys to an account. What they do is waste an evening. For a game that just launched into the part of its life where everyone is trying it at once, that evening is expensive.

If you bounced off a login loop, you were not imagining it, and you were not locked out of your Xbox account. The Coalition’s line is that E-Day was the thing under fire, and that it is back. The longer argument, about why a story mode needs a handshake before the first checkpoint, will still be there in the morning.
